STUART McCLURE - Executive in Residence
Stuart joined MDV in spring 2020 as an Executive in Residence. As Founder and former CEO/Chairman of Cylance, an Irvine, California based Artificial Intelligence (AI) company, Stuart is widely recognized for his extensive and in-depth knowledge of the cybersecurity and AI/ML landscape. Stuart single handedly revolutionized the cybersecurity industry by being the first to apply machine learning and AI to the problem of malicious code execution on the endpoint, with the company he started in 2012, which sold six years later to Blackberry for $1.5bn. The company holds two additional records in cybersecurity: the first to $100M in revenue in three years and three months, and the fastest time to value for a company at $1.5bn in 6.25 years.
Stuart’s education includes a mix of Psychology, Philosophy and Computer Science and his passion for cybersecurity was born at the University of Colorado Boulder where he investigated cyberattacks and programmed solutions. Stuart is a serial entrepreneur starting two additional companies prior to Cylance including Foundstone (started in Irvine, CA in 1999 and sold five years later for $90M to McAfee) and Computerese, which sold in 1993. Stuart has also held senior executive and leadership positions with large global corporations including McAfee (GM and Global CTO), Kaiser Permanente (co-CISO), Ernst & Young (Senior Manager, Cybersecurity) and IDG (Test Labs Director).
Stuart has held numerous board seats including Accuvant/Optiv (sold to KKR), Resilient Systems (sold to IBM), Jask (sold to SumoLogic), CyberGRX (Colorado, Series D), Countertack (LA, CA), Digital Shadows (SF, CA), and many more. Stuart is also a prolific speaker and has presented to countless global audiences at conferences, corporations, board rooms and military and government organizations around the world. Additionally, Stuart has been called on as a cybersecurity expert with numerous news agencies including CNN, MSNBC, CBS and many others.
